Agenda 21, a 40-chapter program of action agreed to by the 179 nation states during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, provides the essential work plan for environment and development as we approach the 21st century. Agenda for Change by Michael Keating translates what was agreed to at Rio into clear, easy to understand language. The book is a quick reference guide to the many policy recommendations that will make virtually every sector of our economy, environment, and society more sustainable.

The International Institute for Sustainable Development, based in Winnipeg, Canada, is trying to accelerate the transition to sustainable development through its research, communications and partnerships. IISD has worked cooperatively with other organizations within Canada through the Projet de Société to indicate the significance of Agenda 21 for Canadians and to understand how institutions within Canada are responding to the challenges of the Earth Summit.

Michael Keating, a Canadian journalist and educator with much experience in covering environment and development issues, is a well-qualified author of this guide. Equally, the Centre for Our Common Future, which organized the parallel citizen’s Global Forum in Rio, has a distinguished record of disseminating information on sustainable development. Therefore, IISD is very pleased to serve as Canadian distributor for Agenda for Change. It should be read by decision-makers, teachers and students, and others concerned about the future and sustainable development of our planet.
