From January to May 2000, more than 350 young people from 57 countries came together in an on-line conference to explore how youth are using ICTs to produce, disseminate and use knowledge for sustainable development. The e-conference, titled "Youth Building Knowledge Societies (YBKS)," focused on the experiences of young people in Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe. The e-conference was structured around three interrelated themes - that of access, education and sustainable livelihoods.
Outcomes
The e-conference findings were shared and further refined by a youth advisory committee at the Global Knowledge II Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 7-10 March. A summary of the final report, presented at the Global Knowledge Action Summit on March 9, highlighted specific issues for consideration and action by the members of the Global Knowledge Partnership (GKP). The full report (172 kb) is available on-line.
Given the high quality of interventions by young people in the YBKS e-conference and the GKII conference, the GKP has committed to ensuring continued participation of youth in all of its activities.
