From 1993 to 1999, IISD's Great Plains Program studied the relationship between economic development, societal needs and the environment and sought to apply sustainable development concepts to the region. Many of our ongoing efforts in the area of climate change and agriculture pick up where the Great Plains Program ended. For example, in the spring of 2000, in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, IISD hosted a workshop designed to raise the awareness of climate change in the agriculture community and promote the development of adaptation strategies for farming in Manitoba. In February 2003, these efforts to support the needs of the agriculture community continued with IISD and the Climate Change Branch of Manitoba Energy, Science and Technology hosting a conference entitled Agriculture and Carbon Management: Benefits and Opportunities for Manitobans. As further opportunities arise, IISD will assist producers, researchers and industry representatives in their efforts to understand the opportunities and impacts a changing climate will present to this vital sector of our economy.
