Title of Initiative Districts of Nepal-Indicators of Development
Lead Organization(s) International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD)
Description of Goal To develop rankings of all 75 districts of Nepal in terms of their level of development/underdevelopment. The presentation of data was also done through appropriate GIS maps.
Geographic Scope National
Framework for Indicator Set We chose four broad categories for which nationally recognized data was available for all the districts. The categories were, Poverty and Deprivation, Natural Resource endowment and management, Socio-economic and Infrastructural development, and Women's empowerment. We selected 39 indicators under the four broad categories and scored the data to find out the ranking of all the districts according to each indicator, category and overall composite index.
Partners The activity was undertaken in partnership with SNV, Nepal. The methodology and findings were discussed with government, non-government development organizations, researchers and other interested people.
Progress to date/future areas of work Completed in June 1997.
Timeframe The study was undertaken during March-June, 1997.
Presentation of the information and indicators The study shows clearly the level of development of all the districts of Nepal in terms of the chosen indicators and broad indices. This goes on to show the spatial distribution of poverty and wellbeing in Nepal, particularly highlighting the extremely low level of development for the far Western Hill and Mountain Districts. This has important implications for development planning and sustainable development of Nepal. Emphasis was also given on environmental and sustainable development issues.
