Title of Initiative Indicators System for Environmental Planning

Description of Goal Based on a modified Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) conceptual structure, the system is intended to have geo-referenced information for a group of relevant variables in order to design environmental policy, to make investment plans, and to identify critical environmental problems to be attacked.
Geographic Scope National
Framework for Indicator Set Under a cooperation agreement with CIAT (International Center for Tropical Agriculture), the following structure has been used: Pressure-State-Impact/Effect-Response-Management. This is based on the OECD model, but it was modified according to the particular needs of the National Planning Department.
Partners The institutions involved are: National Statistics Department (Danish), geographic institute (IGAC), institute for hydrology, meteorology and environment (IDEAM), and the regional entities responsible for environmental management at a decentralized level.
Progress to date/future areas of work
Timeframe The system is still under construction. Phase I began in December 1996 and is expected to end by December 1997.
Presentation of the information and indicators The information will be presented in a geographical information system, including information in several scales. The software will be Arcview.
