Can this program be used as part of a co-op requirement or for thesis research?
No. You must complete your university or college degree before you start the internship program.

If I am not a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant but am on a student visa in Canada can I participate?
No. You must be a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant to be eligible for the program.

Can I participate even if I've had a previous international internship through the federal government's Youth Employment Strategy program?
No. You can participate only once in the internship program Youth Employment Strategy.

Can I develop my own internship project?
No. Interns are matched with IISD's partner organizations. Interns may indicate which country, region or host organization of choice. During the interview, we will be able to assess where best to match your skills.
Note: IISD will be responsible for determining the final location of your posting.

What type of research paper should I send with the application?
If possible, please submit a paper on an environmental issue (trade, climate change, business and sustainable development, agriculture, etc.). Please do not submit your full thesis. (The upper limit for papers is 30 pages.)

How long does the selection process take?
The process takes between 4 and 12 weeks.

When will the placements begin?
Placements generally start at the beginning of September.

What is the application deadline?
The deadline for applications is May 15, 2007.

Will this internship lead me to a job?
This program has been successful in providing young people with the experience they need to further their career opportunities. Your professional experience starts the day you arrive at IISD and continues at your host organization. Before you leave for your overseas placement we will provide you with communications, technology and cross-cultural skills. We will also provide you with strategies for networking and job searching. We cannot guarantee that you will get a job upon completion of your internship but we will assist you with your search.

If I have a student loan do I continue to make payments while on the internship?
You may be eligible for interest relief. On request, IISD will provide individual participants with a letter stating participation in the program.
