Community Initiatives Fund
When you support IISD’s Community Initiatives Fund, you support these vital, community-based programs and projects
Chief among the projects of our Community Initiatives Fund is the development of a system of community indicators for Winnipeg, Canada. In partnership with United Way of Winnipeg, this Community Indicators System (CIS) will measure and report on the progress of the quality of life for Winnipeg’s population. And as it does so, the CIS will compile and coordinate the research needed to build capacity and address the city’s challenges and seize opportunities.
The Canadian Sustainability Indicators Network (CSIN)
Created in 2003, CSIN originated with Environment Canada’s National Indicators and Reporting Office and IISD’s Measurement and Assessment Program. Since then, it has played a key role in the progress toward sustainable development by advancing best practices in measurement and indicator systems across Canada and beyond.
CSIN connects practitioners with international, national, provincial, regional and local communities. Every day, CSIN accomplishes this through listserv communications, virtual learning events, online discussions and face-to-face meetings.

IISD’s Foresight Group
Since 1994 IISD’s Foresight Group—a division of IISD’s Natural and Social Capital Program—has been sharing its measurement and assessment expertise and experience with organizations the world over. This team of experts build capacity to establish integrated monitoring, assessment and reporting systems and sustainable development strategies that make use of them. The Foresight Group also contributes to improving governance, monitoring performance and assessing advances made toward sustainable development. This way, society as a whole can ensure that its progress remains on track today and far into the future.

Peg: Winnipeg`s Community Indicators Systems
Since “The Peg” is a well-known nickname for Winnipeg, it was deemed the ideal name for the new community indicators system to track the city’s well-being, and help drive and mobilize individuals, groups and organizations to strive for sustainable change. Developed by and for Winnipeggers, it uses a community-driven approach to ensure it remains relevant, transparent and accountable to the people of the city. Peg is led by a consortium of partners and collaborators headed by IISD and United Way of Winnipeg.
