conditions in Canada have changed; to demonstrate how issues,
priorities, thinking, and responses have evolved; and to highlight
challenges that remain in our quest for a sustainable future.
A series of monographs accompany the main report and discuss sustainable
management of forests, sustainable transport, ensuring the health
of the oceans and other seas, development of minerals and metals
and youth perspectives on sustainable development.

Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC), held in October, 1994. This report
begins by thematically discussing ecosystem health and integrity,
indicators, aquatic community health, human health, socio-economics.

: a framework for integrated water policy analysis. GLOBO
report series no.6. Bilthoven, The Netherlands: Dutch National
Institute of Public Health and the Environment Global Dynamics
& Sustainable Development Programme (RIVM), 1996. 70 p.
Contents: Summary; 1 - Introduction: Background
to the study, Water policy and sustainable development..., What
are today's water policy issues?, What is integrated water policy
analysis?, Tools for water policy analysis; 2 - Aqua: Overview,
The world model, The river basin models; 3 - The simulation model:

Water system submodel, Impact submodel, Response submodel; 4 -
The framework of indices: Overview, Pressure indices, Water system
state indices, Impact indices, Response indices; 5 - Technical
implementation; 6 - Discussion; 7 - Future research.
Abstract: This report introduces and discusses
the use of a simulation model (AQUA) that provides a framework
for the analysis of water policy. The report presents the reasons
behind the development of AQUA and an overview of AQUA. The present
applications are discussed: the world model and the river basin
model. The simulation model includes four component submodels
(response model, pressure model, water system model, and impact
models). A hierarchical framework of indices is linked to the
simulation model. There are three different types of indices.
Pressure indices provide an indication of the pressure of human
activities on the water system. Water system state indices provide
an indication of the seriousness of water-related problems (eg.,
Fresh water availability, Fresh water quality, Sea level rise).
The water system functions satisfaction indices provide an indication
of the performance of the different functions assigned to the
water system (eg., Agricultural water supply, Industrial water
supply). The authors explain how AQUA can be implemented and outline
future research directions.

Abstract: This report suggests that Canadians do
not have adequate information on which to base sound decisions
concerning sustainable development, to set realistic sustainable
development goals, or measure progress toward those goals. It
recommends strengthening the federal government's role in facilitating
more effective reporting of information, and in so doing, it focuses
on four major decision-making groups: households, communities,
for-profit corporations, and governments. Norway. State of the Environment

resources, as well as integrating environmental and economic policies
and strengthening co-operation with the international community.
This book discusses current trends and responses to the management
of the ecosystem, water, waste, and air. The integration of policies
in the forestry and energy sectors receives particular attention.
Environmental performance is assessed with regard to the degree
of achievement of domestic objectives and international commitments.
The assessment of environmental performance is placed within the
context of historical environmental records, the present state
of environment, the physical endowment of the country in natural
resources, its economic conditions and demographic trends.

used in the report; assesses the state of the environment in eight
different fields (eg., air, water, soil); describes the pressures
which affect the environment; examines the sources of environmental
pressures arising from human activities in eight different sectors
(eg., energy, transport); analyses the 12 most pressing environmental
problems facing European countries; and presents a summary of
