Content of References
A broad range of sources has been included covering the topic in very general terms to more complex and specific terms. The bibliography has been designed for people with some knowledge of economics.
Criteria
Sources must have been published within the period of 1989 to 1994 with the exception of cornerstone writings. Citations will be considered to be classics if they are extensively quoted in the literature and are well respected by the authors in the field.
Because the bibliography is focused and specific, sources must be 85-100% on the topic of government budgets as a means of ensuring a sustainable environment.
Articles etc., must be representative of the trend in theory and practice over the period considered.
Each category contains citations which reflect this trend and those which criticize it in order to give a balanced view of the subject field. It is also often the case that criticism leads to the next development in a field of study.
All sources in English.
Each annotation is structured in the same manner. Bibliographic details are given first, followed by a short description of the content of the reference. An attempt was made to capture the essence of the content in each source. A list of keywords is provided after the annotation. In some cases a section on related works by the same author has also been included. Where this is the case, the reference annotated was deemed to be the most comprehensive of the author's work or provides a summary of the author's views on the use of economic instruments for environmental protection and/or sustainable development. This author has occasionally added a comments section to an annotation. Usually this serves the purpose of linking the contents of a couple of the annotations.
