The Shadow Curriculum: On Campus Activities
How can students, faculty and administrators put into practice what is taught in
the curriculum? The campus itself is an ideal test bed for new approaches and
ways of thinking and living that are supportive of sustainability.
- Campus Policies
Ideally, policies and procedures should integrate all aspects of
sustainable development; economic, environmental and social well-being. But if
you look through our policy bank, you will find that many deal narrowly with
environmental concerns. And few address the quality of life on campus. The
following materials outline many factors to be considered in developing good,
sustainable policies and practices. Also check out our policy evaluation
instrument located on the Policy Bank: this will help to guide you in developing
your policies and procedures.

- Management Systems
An environmental management system (EMS) establishes what an organization
needs to do in order to manage itself so as to meet its environmental, economic
and sustainable development goals. Such a system will decide what the goals
should be, policies and strategies for implementation, and will create the
necessary linkages between environmental concerns, the economic/budget
considerations and how the institution will respond. ISO 14000 is the evolving
international standard defining an appropriate environmental management system
for many kinds of organizations.
