Community-Scale Composting at Olds CollegeRecognizing that approximately one-third of the municipal waste stream is compostable organic material, Olds College (Alberta) applied municipal-scale composting technologies to provide relief to the local garbage crisis while producing environmentally-enhanced and marketable products. After five years of composting livestock manure from the college farm and selling the product across western Canada, Olds College opened in 1994 its new Composting Technology Centre. The Centre handles college and community wastes, demonstrates a variety of composting technologies and provides education and research on compost. Olds College handles annually more than 400 tonnes of yard waste up to 4000 tonnes of animal waste, and wastes from the local Auction Mart and Agricultural Society.
