Carbon sequestration has potential impacts and benefits for Manitoba producers, including improving agricultural production and environmental quality, and promoting long-term sustainability. As the Manitoba government continues to frame its climate change strategy, agriculture's role in that response has become increasingly important. The agriculture sector is responsible for 34 per cent of CO2 equivalent emissions for the province. Agricultural practices like zero tillage, reduced summer fallow, improved grazing strategies, and preservation of wetlands and riparian areas work to sequester carbon. Understanding the economic, agronomic/environmental, societal and agro-forestry benefits of carbon management helps support the argument for increased adoption of sustainable agriculture practices across the province.
