In the federal government's Climate Change Plan for Canada, agriculture is predicted to sequester 10 MT of carbon by the first Kyoto commitment period. Producers using agricultural techniques that result in the sequestration of carbon in their soils hope to have the opportunity to sell the offsets (carbon reductions created by emission reductions strategies or by storage in the soil) into the domestic emissions trading system.
If agricultural producers are to take advantage of the opportunities carbon trading offers, it is critical that they understand this emerging market. They need to understand where the demand for offset credits will come from; current and future scenarios for market activity; and the challenges and risks of becoming involved in this type of market.
