New United Motor Manufacturing

New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. (NUMMI) is a carmaking company established as a joint venture of Toyota and General Motors. It is the only vehicle manufacturing plant in California, and builds Toyota Corolla sedans, Toyota Tacoma pickups and Chevrolet Prizms. The company is recognized as an industry leader in quality management.

At NUMMI, Hoshin Kanri is used as one of the methods to implement the management's philosophy and to achieve corporate goals. The company's goal is 'to build products with quality as high as anywhere in the world while ensuring that costs are the most competitive of any manufacturer'.

To achieve this goal, the company has established policies that define the long-term direction of the company:

  • Ensure a stable and co-operative relationship among all team members, particularly between labour and management;
  • Ensure quality in the production process;
  • Establish and maintain long-term and stable relationships with qualified suppliers;
  • Maintain a co-operative, friendly relationship within the community by being a fair employer and good neighbour.

To help guide these policies, NUMMI establishes specific goals and objectives each year.
