Monday, August 26 to Wednesday, September 4

  • The Earth Negotiations Bulletin will have 18-20 reporters providing reporting services on the coverage of official UN negotiating sessions as well as official side events and some parallel events. The Earth Negotiations Bulletin is a neutral, authoritative and up-to-the-minute record of ongoing multilateral negotiations on environment and sustainable development.

Tuesday August 27 – Tuesday September 3

  • IISD will be distributing Ten Plus Ten, a review of the successes and failures since Rio, throughout the week. It asks the questions: what has the world accomplished since 1992, where have we all fallen short and what do we do next? IISD has identified the WSSD “Top 10” times two: the 10 under-celebrated successes in the last 10 years and the 10 glaring failures.

  • David Runnalls, Heather Creech and Mark Halle will participate in the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)/RING event on Research Partnerships for Sustainable Development.

Friday, August 30

9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

  • Heather Creech, Director of Knowledge Communication will be participating in IUCN’s Futures Dialogue on Digital Opportunities for a Sustainable World. She will sit on a panel exploring the impact of information communication technology (ICT) applications on creating and reducing the digital divide. Emphasis will be on equitable access of technologies and information around the world and the impact of sustainable development networks and projects.

Ubuntu Village Conference Centre, Room F Fever Tree

  • Dr. Peter Hardi, Director of Measurements and Indicators and Jochen Jesinghaus, a member of IISD’s Consultative Group on Sustainable Development Indicators, will give a presentation on the Dashboard of Sustainability. The Dashboard is a visually-engaging, online tool designed to be understood by experts, the media, policy-makers and the general public. Using the almost universally-recognized image of a control panel of an aircraft or car, it turns a complex array of economic, social and environmental performance indicators into a simple graphic representation and provides both quantitative and qualitative information about progress toward (or away from) sustainability. The Dashboard allows presentation of complex relationships in a highly communicative format.

Evening

  • Dr. Arthur Hanson, Distinguished Fellow and Senior Scientist at IISD, served as chair of the Technical Advisory Committee for the Equator Initiative. He will be involved with the Jury in selecting the six community-based winners for the Equator Prize 2002. The Equator Prize awards US$30,000 for innovative partnerships for sustainable development in tropical ecosystems. The prize dinner will take place on 30 August. The 27 finalist organizations will be planning future activities prior to that.

Saturday, August 31

11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

  • The International Institute for Sustainable Development’s video, Sila Alangotok: Inuit Observations on Climate Change, will be shown at the Canadian Pavilion as part of a theme day on Sustainable Development in the North being hosted by Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC). The video is the outcome of a project involving IISD and the Hunters and Trappers Committee of Sachs Harbour who documented the problem of Arctic climate change through the use of participatory workshops, semi-structured interviews, community meetings and fieldwork to better understand the extent of local knowledge of climate change. David Runnalls, President of the International Institute for Sustainable Development, will give a presentation highlighting the impact it has had on the global community.

  • Dr. Peter Hardi, Director of Measurements and Indicators and Jochen Jesinghaus, a member of IISD’s Consultative Group on Sustainable Development Indicators, will present the Dashboard of Sustainability as part of IUCN’s Business Day.
  • ICC/UNEP World Summit Business Awards for Sustainable Development Partnerships will be announced. Stephan Barg. Senior Project Manager of Economic Policy, was one of the judges and will be acknowledged at the event.

Sunday, September 1

6:15 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. IUCN Environment Centre

  • David Runnalls, President of IISD, will host an event to celebrate the success of the Canadian Government's International Internship Program. The International Institute for Sustainable Development has been a sponsoring organization of the Government of Canada’s Youth International Internship program (YIIP) since 1997. During the past five years over 130 remarkable young Canadians have been involved in IISD's program sharing their skills, promoting sustainability, and gaining international work experience. Former participants in the program and Canadian government officials will discuss how useful the program has been for the interns, hosts, and sponsors and for advancing Canada's contribution to sustainable development overall. This event is sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Canadian International Development Agency

  • Heather Creech, Director of Knowledge Communications, will be chairing a Global Knowledge Partnership panel discussion on ICTs and Sustainable Development.

Tuesday, September 3

5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. IUCN Environment Centre, Atrium

  • David Runnalls President of IISD along with Mark Halle, Director of Trade and Investment and Anne Hammill, Project Officer for Environment and Security will launch Conserving the Peace: Resources, Livelihoods and Security. The book is a series of case studies examining how natural resource management (or mismanagement) is linked to social tension and conflict, and identifying a role for the conservation community in addressing the environmental roots of insecurity. The keynote address will be given by Queen Noor of Jordan. The event will be part of a theme day on Environment and Security being held by IUCN.
