ABS Activities

  1. Summary Report from the Working Dinner on the ABS-MT, ABSWG 5, Montreal, Québec, Canada (PDF - 272 kb)
    This report presents a summary of the conclusions and recommendation coming out of a working dinner held in October 2007 in Montreal QC, Canada at the time of the fifth meeting of the Ad hoc Open-ended Intersessional Working Group on Access and Benefit-sharing (ABS) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Thirty three representatives from international organizations, research and academia, government, industry, and non-government organizations attended the meeting to build support for and engagement in the implementation of the ABS-MT.

    This report presents a summary of the major issues and key action items discussed at the international multistakeholder workshop on access and benefit sharing held in Heredia, Costa Rica, November 2006.

  5. Field Testing
    The Project Team is working to "test" the draft Access and Benefit Sharing Management Tool (ABS-MT) in ongoing access and benefit sharing negotiations. "Testing" of the draft refers to its use in ABS negotiations for access and/or for benefit sharing by users and/or providers of genetic resources. The ABS-MT Project Team is also involved to introduce the use of the ABS-MT and to observe the lessons learned from its use. Field tests are ongoing in Malaysia and Australia, and work is ongoing to explore potential opportunities in Cameroon and Bolivia. Reports from the Malaysia and Australia field tests are forthcoming.

  6. Stakeholder Workshop
    The Project Team is organizing a stakeholder workshop 27 and 28 November 2006, in Costa Rica. The objectives of this of this event are to:

    • Review the lessons learnt from testing and external outreach of the ABS-MT;
    • Debate potential solutions to meet the challenges and grey areas surrounding ABS processes;
    • Critically review the outline of the revised MT. (This draft (PDF - 36 kb) will be circulated to the advisory committee for comment before being presented at the workshop); and
    • Identify possible options for implementation and formalization of the use of the MT.

  7. "Grey Areas and Challenges in Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing Measures Work" is in progress to develop a discussion document on the above. More information is forthcoming.
