Laxanachantorn Laohaphan


Ambassador Laxanachantorn Laohaphan is a career diplomat. Since joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand in 1972, Amb. Laxanachantorn has served in the Department of Economic Affairs, the Royal Thai Embassy in Rome (as Alternate Representative to the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Programme and IFAA), the Department of International Organizations, the Permanent Mission of Thailand to the United Nations in New York (as Alternate Representative to the UN Security Council), and Department of ASEAN Affairs. In 1994, she became Thailand’s Ambassador to the Commonwealth of Australia, Fiji, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. In 2000, she served as the Director-General of the Department of International Organizations and was later appointed as a Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry. Since January 2003, she has served as Thailand’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva. For the year of 2003, Ambassador Laxanachantorn also serves as Chair of the G-77 Chapter in Geneva.

Ambassador Laxanachantorn has keen interest in global issues and has consistently paid particular attention to the issue of sustainable development and its inextricable linkage with human security. She is known as both a thinker and a practitioner and is noted for her non-traditional way of thinking and her forward-looking and action-oriented approach.

Ambassador Laohaphan was elected to IISD's board of directors in June 2003.
Amb Laohaphan completed her service on the Board in June 2009.
