John R. Gagain Jr.


Mr. Gagain is the Executive Vice-President of the United Nations Association of the Dominican Republic (UNA-DR)—presided by Dr. Leonel Fernández, former President of the Dominican Republic—where he is responsible for the overall administration of the Association's programs and initiatives, which include the Model United Nations, Partners for Sustainable Development, and the Dominican Business Council for the United Nations.

Mr. Gagain was the Coordinator of Model United Nations at the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) where he was editor of the Association’s Model U.N. Publications including the Guide to Delegate Preparation, The Final Report of the MUN Summit and Leadership Conference, How to Plan a Model U.N. Conference and the Calendar of Model U.N. Conferences.

Mr. Gagain attended Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), focusing on International Economic Policy with a concentration in International Trade and Latin American Studies. He has written recommendations on U.S. foreign economic policy for Ambassador Richard Gardner, former economic advisor to Al Gore and member of the Clinton Administration’s Advisory Council on Trade Policy and Negotiations (ACTPN). Mr. Gagain has represented various NGOs and institutes at conferences including the Earth Summit +5 (New York), the International Conference on Financing for Development (Monterrey), and the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg).

He currently is a consultant for the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), serving as a writer for the Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB). In 2001, Mr. Gagain served as Youth Delegate Advisor on the U.S. Delegation to the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance.

He attended Pace University where he majored in Political Science, concentrated in International Affairs and participated in Model U.N. Mr. Gagain serves as the New York Representative for The Hague International Model U.N. (THIMUN) Foundation.

Mr. Gagain has also been on staff at many Model U.N. conferences holding such positions including Chief of Staff of the National Model U.N. (NMUN) and President of the World Bank and Security Council at the Southern Regional Model U.N. (SRMUN). Mr. Gagain speaks English and Spanish.
