
Keeping our house in order
When we started this renewed assessment and reporting initiative in June 2001, most team members were motivated and interested, but not necessarily experienced. Throughout this first year we have learned much, but realize that there is still a long way to go before we achieve the kind of reporting process and report that we envision.
Most of our efforts went to developing a procedure for collecting data with the intent of providing a baseline for comparison in the future. In addition, we established a starting point for setting organizational goals. We believe we have accomplished these two objectives.
What is apparent in this, our first report, is that we have tackled the "easy" things first—green procurement and waste management—already mature practices at IISD. Now, we have to tackle more challenging issues with the potential to affect the way we operate: how to reduce carbon emissions, which will influence the amount we travel and how, and the extent to which we collaborate virtually; staffing and capacity building; and how we contribute to the achievement of our vision and mission through our operational procedures.
