Our vision: Better living for all—sustainably
Our mission: To champion innovation, enabling societies to live sustainably
IISD is committed to promoting a global transition to sustainable development. Our work output is directed at decision-makers and is designed to achieve demonstrable results in Canada and abroad. We honour our commitments to our funders, partners, employees and community. In doing so, we follow operating policies that conserve and protect resources needed for the survival of future generations. We endeavour to exceed, wherever possible, environmental, health, safety and employment regulations. We set specific goals consistent with our sustainable development objectives and report our progress in attaining these goals.
Our goal is to improve our environmental, social and economic performance and measure our progress.
IISD has long been active in assessing its own operations to ensure that they are sustainable. For many years we have successfully reduced office waste and sourced and purchased office supplies meeting environmental and development criteria. We are continuing to build on these successes by choosing and measuring new indicators each year and monitoring our progress. Our annual IISD Sustainable Development Report demonstrates IISD's on-going commitment to sustainable development at the operational level. The IISD Sustainable Development report is compiled and written by the Internal Sustainable Development Assessment and Reporting (ISDAR) Team, comprised of individuals from across the functional and programme areas of the organization. This Team works under the direction of, and reports to, the Corporate Management Team. ISDAR Team Members are:
Non Governmental Organization's Use of the Global Reporting Initiative Guidelines for Sustainability Reporting
IISD's Sustainable Development Report is prepared following guidelines developed by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). Presently, there are only a handful of non-governmental organizations using the GRI guidelines when preparing internal sustainable development reports. This paper explores the experiences of IISD and the Center for Human Rights and Environment (CEDHA) in implementing the Guidelines.
2003-2004 Carbon Offsets Purchase Certificate
IISD is committed to operating as a carbon neutral organization, tracking, and offsetting its CO2 emissions created by our air travel, office energy use and employee commuting. To offset our 2003-2004 emissions IISD purchased 980 tonnes of Green Energy from the VisionQuest Wind Energy, based in Alberta, Canada.
