Since 1992, the authors of Our Responsibility to the Seventh Generation, and others working on indigenous issues, have developed new approaches to reclaiming and building on the strengths of indigenous communities around the world. We have listed a sample of these initiatives, including current work by IISD with aboriginal communities in Manitoba and the north.

• The Healing Circle
  
  

  A tool used by aboriginal teachers to illustrate aspects of the indigenous community over time, and particularly how the people have been affected by colonization.

• Appreciative Inquiry: Skownan First Nation Community Values Project
  
  

  A process that encourages Aboriginal people at the community level to make their views known, and incorporates those views in the decision-making process. It strives to establish community consensus on the potential value of forests to Aboriginal people.

• Linking traditional environmental knowledge with western scientific research: Inuit Observations on Climate Change
  
  

  IISD is working with the community of Sachs Harbour, on Banks Island in the High Arctic, to record their observations on climate change, and report on the contribution that local observation and traditional knowledge can make to scientific research on climate change.
