Call to Action

In 1992, the authors called for an international program on Indigenous sustainable development, noting that for a successful program, it would be necessary for key actors to develop working relationships with traditional peoples, youth and women, since it is they who have the most to contribute to innovative approaches for Indigenous peoples and sustainable development. The primary components of a program for Indigenous peoples and sustainable development should include:

  1. Protection for the traditional way of life
  2. Documentation, promotion and protection of traditional knowledge and practices
  3. Healing programs
  4. Education for cultural survival
  5. Economic self-reliance
  6. The development of a communication capacity

--Clarkson, Morrissette and Régallet, authors of Our Responsibility to the Seventh Generation, 1992
