Mohamed Sahnoun

Mohamed Sahnoun is currently associated with the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) based in Ottawa, Canada. He was previously a Distinguished Fellow at the US Institute of Peace. Ambassador Sahnoun served as special envoy of the Secretary General of the OAU in the Congo in 1993 and as Senior Advisor to the Secretary General of the United Nations Conference of Environment and Development in 1992. He was Special Representative of the U.N. Secretary General in Somalia (March-October 1992).

Mr. Sahnoun was Counsellor to the President of Algeria for Foreign Affairs from 1990-1992, Ambassador to Morocco and Secretary of the Maghreb Union (1989-1990), Ambassador to the United States (1984-1989), and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (1982-1984). Ambassador Sahnoun was a member of the World Commission on Environment and Development (Brundtland Commission).

Previously, Mr. Sahnoun served as Ambassador to France, Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany, Deputy Secretary-General of the Arab League for Arab-African dialogue and Deputy Secretary-General of the Organization of African Unity in charge of political affairs.
