Berend Hartnagel

Berend Hartnagel is the International Co-ordinator for EXPO 2000 in Hanover. A graduate of the University of Hamburg where he qualified in political, economic and social sciences, he has had a distinguished career centering on the analysis and evaluation of socio-economic structures, particularly in Latin America. After serving with a number of development programmes he began an association with the Friedrich Ebert Foundation first in Caracas and then in Colombia, and later served as CEO to the Environmental Foundation, Colegio Verde de Villa de Leyva.
Dr. Hartnagel has served as a consultant on a number of projects, ranging from social reform and crime, to soil erosion, ecological agriculture and re-afforestation. He has also worked in Africa, having evaluated the DED programme in the Ivory Coast and advised Lesotho on setting up the "Rural Self-Help Development Association". He was the founder and editor of the quarterly magazine "Cuadernos Verdes" (Colombia) and has edited and co-authored various socio-political references.
