Brief Description

In 1992, the Movement for Ethics in Politics played a major role in the impeachment of the Brazilian President. In 1993, the leaders of the movement decided to take on the issue of hunger. "Citizenship Action Against Misery and for Life," as the press quickly labelled it, grew to an unexpected broad-based participation campaign. Today there are approximately 5000 committees across the country where all sectors of Brazilian society -- workers, students, businessmen, artists - are involved in activities of gathering and distributing food. So far, 21 million Brazilians have been mobilized. [Note: Did not participate in Study Conference in New York, 22-24 Sept. 1995]
