Brief Description
For a hundred years the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City has embraced the widest variety of ethnic, cultural and religious traditions. It gives voice to the voiceless, and provides a forum for expression of great ideas, music and art. Its annual festival of Saint Francis of Assisi promotes respect for all living creatures apart from their utility to humans. Long before environmental awareness was popular, the Cathedral was involved in this field. Faced with the need to maintain and complete its buildings, the Cathedral implemented a program to train stone masons from its local neighbourhood. The Cathedral responds flexibly to external challenges by building on its base of strong principles and commitment to inclusiveness and social justice.
