Brief Description
Rural decline is a common phenomenon in urbanizing and developed countries. The Village Action Movement in Finland demonstrates that this is not an inevitable conclusion. 2800 villages, affecting the lives of 500,000 people have undertaken to make their villages viable and vibrant communities through projects of culture, leisure, communications, services, housing and economic development. They have overcome passivity, re-evaluated their priorities and chosen to emphasize their culture and build a rural lifestyle which is self-reliant and community based.
