Brief Description
Ten years ago, this group of women saw their neighbourhood on the outskirts of Havana getting poorer, their housing more run-down and social problems deepening. With building materials and technical expertise from the Cuban State, the women have built nine of 22 proposed buildings, as well as a health clinic, junior high, special schools, a primary school, and a laundry. Organized into brigades with 33 women each, 19 work on the actual construction, while the remaining 14 work in setting up social services. 70% of the workers are women, and all the brigade chiefs are women.
