Brief Description

Ten years ago, Whitfield, in the City of Dundee, was among the poorest housing estates of Scotland. Since then through citizen action and participation, it has reduced its rates of unemployment, low income and overcrowding by more than 50%. Decisions about local services and other improvements are made through surveys, public meetings, and a network of community groups. The community is involved at all stages of decision making as equal partners with local authorities, the private sector and the central government.
