Brief Description
This collective of women pavement and slum dwellers has devised survival strategies, empowered women, established democratic decision-making vehicles and used its own resources to improve the lot of the urban poor. They have formed savings groups, negotiated with the state for their rights and their basic needs, and for shelter planning both in terms of design and location. This process of united action has brought about important changes in relationships within their families and communities. For the first time in Bombay, women have emerged as community leaders.
