Brief Description
In 1985 the Appropriate Technology Association initiated a "Local Weaving Development Project" aimed at empowering the rural women of a region of Thailand. It now involves over 500 women in 24 villages, many of whom have established their own cooperatives. The model is based on research of the traditional use of local natural resources (trees, fruit, leaves etc.). The revival of craft culture and the uplifting of the women has brought new vigour to these communities, addressing gender issues, sustainable development, and their cultural heritage.
