Brief Description
The community of Sant'Egidio, a non-profit Catholic charity, has spent twenty-seven years tending to Rome's poor. The concrete image of Sant'Egidio is that of a soup kitchen, where daily approximately two thousand foreigners and homeless find a meal. Less well-known is that Sant'Egidio has worked internationally since the beginning of the eighties on certain geopolitical problems and crises of various types: wars and local conflicts, areas stricken with hunger, and natural calamities. In 1992, for instance, this community was instrumental in securing a peace treaty for Mozambique after more than two years of diplomatic work. Its humanitarian arm has reached as far as Ethiopia, El Salvador, Vietnam and Namibia before independence.
